Making healthy carbohydrate choices

This here is my downfall because I L-O-V-E carbs! More than chocolate possibly! But there are good and bad carbs, a.k.a. complex and simple. As you may already guess, complex are good for us and most of our carb choices should come from that category. Simple.. well they may be delicious but not so good for our bodies.

Here are some tips to help you choose the good guys:

* Grains and grain products. Instead of sugary cereals look for the unsweetened whole grain options. They do exist but you may have to scan the bottom shelves of the cereal area. And let me tell you, they won't be the number one choice for the kids! Also, try to select whole wheat pasta and baked goods over white flour, and brown rice over white. Make sure you also try other grains like old fashioned oats, rye, corn, barley, quinoa, wheat and oat bran.

*Vegetables. Eat a variety from all different colors: orange, dark-green, red, white etc. Some to mention are peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, cabbage etc.

*Fruits. Include a wide variety of fruits with your diet: citrus, melon, mango, apple, banana, berries, prunes, etc. Variety is the key so you won't get bored.

* Milk, yogurt and cheese. Low fat, low sugar is always better than high fat, highly sweetened. Of course if you look at the ingredients, the low fat options have way more ingredients, some of which I don't even recognize. I personally sometimes go for the more natural high fat option but the trick to eating it is to eat TEENY TINY bit. Really, so teeny you will have to pull out the magnifying glass to see it. Well almost anyway.

*Beans and nuts. These foods are powerhouses of nutrition and a simple way to get healthy complex carbs into your diet. I love both but my family doesn't like beans. I sneak them into foods like sauces, cookies etc. and the family has no clue. Gotta love it :)
