Tea Tree Oil

Today's post will be a "What Why and How" about Tea Tree Oil (TTO).

What is Tea Tree Oil? It is essential oil clear to pale golden in color. Tea Tree oil is taken from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, which is native to New South Wales, Australia. The oil has a very strong smell but don't let that scare you, this stuff can come in handy! TTO contains over 100 components of which terpinen-4-ol is the most abundant and the one we can thank for most of the antimicrobial activity.

Why is it used? It is used because it has beneficial medical properties: it is antifungal, antiseptic and antibacterial. TTO has activity against staphylococcus aureus, icluding MRSA. Who knew?! Say you have nail fungus, athlete's foot, acne, lice, dandruff, stuffiness, sore throat, rash, hives, gout, head cold, warts, sunburn etc. (hopefully not at the same time), you can use it! You can also use it for cleaning your house since it is anti everything. I found this website where you can read more about the uses of TTO. I am currently using it to treat a rash spot on my finger. I added a few drops into a little bit of water and I wipe the spot with a cottonball saturated with TTO morning and night. My spotty's starting to look better!

How is it used? It is used diluted, as pure oil commonly causes irritation. Please note: TEA TREE OIL IS TOXIC IF SWALLOWED so for Pete's sake, keep it out of reach of children, pets and dumb adults! Don't you sample it either! Although after you smell it I have a feeling that's the last thing you'd want to do :o) Do not make or add it into your mouthwash/toothpaste, and do keep it out of your eyes. Also, if you are pregnant or nursing, it is recommended that you stay away from TTO.

Caution: This product is for people with common sense. Read about it before purchasing and remember: a healthy dose of skepticism is a good thing if you happen upon a website that also sells the product!
